In Ichi-ban Goes Hiking by Julie Maurer, Ichi-ban shares her first hike, explaining how she suffered from a short tumble and a close encounter with a cactus while she explored rocky terrain and cold streams. Readers watch the puppy grow into an adult dog as she ventures out of sight of her human parent, but not so far away that Ichi-ban can't see her. Ichi-ban discusses her favorite people, "Mommy", "Daddy", and Uncle Bill, and the smells that delight her nose. No matter the weather or season, she is ready for a day of mountain hiking, but it isn't great when the day's smells get washed away at home. She meets horses, children, and other dogs, but she plays with them without trouble. But one day, Ichi-ban and her mommy see something concerning as they hike and must stay still.
Julie Maurer presents a heartwarming story about a sweet dog. Told in the first person, children view the endearing tale from Ichi-ban's perspective. She learns as she grows, teaching children valuable lessons, like playing together nicely and restraint before leaping off large rocks. The story also raises valuable talking points, like ways to spot good berries to eat in the wild and how to best approach a dog's owner if you wish to pet the animal. Readers get a glimpse into Ichi-ban's world, seeing her excitement over sights and smells and her home care after a busy day outside. Caregivers who wonder if their child is ready for a pet may use the book to inform children of the daily responsibilities of dog owners, especially if the family spends a lot of time outdoors. Readers who enjoy realistic adventurous stories about animals who are adorable and humorous will love Ichi-ban Goes Hiking.
