The Devil’s Own is an exciting work of young adult urban fantasy penned by author K. A. Fox, and is the first book in the Murphy’s Law series. Our central heroine is Delaney Murphy, a young woman who has known from the start that she is the daughter of the Devil himself. When she discovers that she has inherited some demonic skills, such as siren-like powers and sucking the life force out of people, Laney decides she needs to keep away from those she’s grown to love on Earth. But when a serial killer springs up with all the traits of a supernatural demon, she knows that she’s the only girl on Earth who can stop the murders.
There was action and intrigue on every page of this novel, paced ideally for its young adult audience. I liked the development of Laney as a central character and the idea that the Devil himself isn’t quite so clear-cut evil as a lot of fiction makes him out to be. The characters from both Hell and Earth were well constructed, and I enjoyed seeing the envoys that the Devil sent to protect Laney on her quest, and how she interacted with them. I thought that character development was good in general, bringing a cast of interesting figures to the fore for this adventure and future books. Author K. A. Fox used dialogue really well, capturing teen voices with sarcasm, wit and amusement. Overall, The Devil’s Own is a superb novel for teen horror and urban fantasy enthusiasts, and I’d definitely recommend it.
