“The boy with no father/ Who has many fathers/ The child of old blood/ With the blood of new/ Who finds the treasure/ While lost…” And so the riddle continues with the curse of the ancient Hawaiian king now attached to a Lomi stick that will change the course of history, past and present. In Damascinus’s Dante and the Magic Lomi Stick, young Dante suffers a terrible loss. His father, a military man, dies tragically in a training exercise. His mother decides to relocate to their home state of Oahu in Hawaii, to be with family. While hiking, Dante discovers a magical Lomi stick. He doesn’t know what it is, though he’s intrigued by it. Little does he know the power it contains, nor the history it carries and the danger that can unfold for whoever has it.
Damascinus’s middle-grade novel, Dante and the Magic Lomi Stick, is an adventure that will captivate young readers. The action unfolds as Dante is hunted by evil celestials and it’s a race against time to set things right and save the day for himself and those he loves. The language is simple but powerful, and the background setting of Hawaii adds some mystique to the story. The author uses Hawaiian words and provides a glossary at the beginning to help young readers understand and appreciate these words. The characters are sincere and believable and the dialogue is used effectively to develop the characters and move the plot forward. This is a great story for young readers; it’s both engaging and educational.
