The Darnley Jewel Murder by Rebecca Solomon begins with Ian MacDougall calling on his old nanny, Mrs. Wallace. She is concerned that her son-in-law committed one of the largest heists in Scotland when the Darnley Jewel comes into his possession. She hopes Ian’s previous job as a police officer would give him the connections needed to just return the jewel without her daughter suffering. After Ian takes the jewel, he is killed without telling anyone where the jewel is hidden. Elaine MacDougall travels to Scotland from the United States to represent her uncle. With her uncle’s solicitor, James Barry, they attempt to find the jewel, uncover the thieves, and apprehend a killer. Danger and accusations are around every corner.
In The Darnley Jewel Murder, you feel the intensity build as the suspense increases. Rebecca Solomon keeps her readers guessing as to whom among Ian MacDougall’s friends and co-workers are involved in his murder. The pace is steady as characters are developed and schemes are revealed. There were many people indebted to Ian MacDougall; out of friendship, his financial generosity, love, and his possession of the jewel they want. As Elaine and James worked to untangle motives and intentions, it slowly reveals the killer. The ending was fascinating as everything fell into place. I especially enjoyed the bits of Scottish history and geography lessons woven within the story. Knowing the author used real people to model her characters on puts this novel on a more personal level. This is a superb read for those who enjoy a good murder mystery.
