A quest is only as good as the journey involved and the characters that make the journey. I was satisfied on both counts as I read The City of Arches: Sitnata Series Book 3 by Alisse Lee Goldenberg. The writing style and the characters kept the story moving along at a very satisfying and interesting pace. The story didn’t have the feel of those big ponderous epics like The Lord of the Rings, and yet the story felt important and the mission was dangerous. I liked the balance of the writing as Alisse Lee Goldberg chose the right words for the right time, instead of being too wordy as some fantasy authors are prone to do. I liked this book because I found it deeply personal and very well written. I wasn’t in the mood for a giant novel and the length of this story was perfect for my mood because they were good pages.
I loved the characters: a somewhat eccentric wizard and an exotic young princess who has fallen on hard times. They are both characters that don’t trust easily, but they need each other in order to make their individual dreams come true. They must work together and learn to trust each other. This is a challenge and the outcome is one of the better results of the quest. The plot is good, and they have their ups and downs. This is where the writing itself makes the story keep moving at an interesting pace. The setting is good and I liked the way magic is explained and used. This is the second book I’ve read by Alisse E. Goldenberg and it is just as satisfying as the first one. I am following this author. I like the writing.
