The Bloody Shoe Affair: A Daring and Thrilling Adventure with the Jailer's Daughter is a young adult mystery written by Joy York. Christi and her family are on their way to Roselyn, Mississippi, to celebrate her grandparents' fiftieth anniversary. While the rest of the family will be staying with Mama Lou and Daddy Joe, 14-year-old Christi will be staying with her cousin, Lily, and her aunt and uncle. Lily's father is the county jailer and her mother cooks for the prisoners. Lily's been visiting with prisoners in the jail since she was small. Christi's a bit nervous about staying with Lily as she always seems to get into hot water over Lily's adventures and pranks. This time, Lily's trying to find out about a mysterious pair of blood-spattered shoes.
Joy York's historical young adult mystery, The Bloody Shoe Affair, is clever and fun. I loved how York worked in the late 1960s era through the references to music woven throughout the story. Lily and Christi are promising sleuths, willing to take chances and follow leads to save an innocent man, and the mystery they're attempting to solve is well-plotted and convincing. The Bloody Shoe Affair is also a marvelous coming of age story as Christi gains some independence from her family during her trip and also experiences a bit of romance. While this mystery was written for young adults, I found it to be an entertaining and satisfying story that mystery fans of all ages should enjoy. The Bloody Shoe Affair: A Daring and Thrilling Adventure with the Jailer's Daughter is most highly recommended.
