The Bite of a King (Book 6) by Simon Cantan wraps up the fantasy adventure of the Bytarend series. The King of Mognisio just marks every ruler from the Thief Kingdoms to Sqat for death. He’s bringing an army of twelve thousand to crush them all. Lila, Isabelle, Jenni, Tondbert and Osric have to defy the odds if they want to survive and protect what they have been struggling to achieve; a better life for their people.
I’m happy that all the original heroes of Bytarend are together again. They have developed so much since The Bite on the Line (Book 1). There’s even an addition to Bytarend’s list of odd creatures. During their investigation of the bottomless pit of the station house, Captain Osric and Sergeant Gloria find a squirrel-like creature that eats everything, even metal. The eccentric Professor O'Neill keeps inventing questionable and dangerous looking contraptions such as the deforester, which is used to chop trees easily. Isabelle and Tondbert are doing well with their lives, busy fortifying their castle. Politics seem to dominate the characters' lives, albeit in a restrained manner.
The plot is appropriately paced and has some twists that readers would least expect. The action scenes are full of suspense, particularly when Lila and the other Murder Queens are involved. Coupled with humor, The Bite of a King is an enjoyable read and has a solid ending, a fitting finale to end the Bytarend series. Readers who have been following the story since the beginning would be satisfied. All in all, a great series from Simon Cantan.
