The Biggest Hole in the Iron Curtain: The Batizy Story by Levente Batizy is the story of the Batizy family as they traveled from Hungary to America, chasing the American Dream. Once part of European nobility, the Batizy family lost it all when communism took over the country and they had to start afresh. The only option they thought they had was emigrating to America and that is exactly what Gusztav and Julianna did. They packed their bags, got their children, and started the journey towards the American Dream. However, no one told them that the American Dream was just that; a dream. They would have to give more than their blood, sweat, and tears to achieve even half of this dream. Can a former freedom fighter offer a fighting chance to his family in a foreign land? Will they chase the dream or can they achieve it?
Levente Batizy takes the reader one step deeper into the lives of his family and shares what they went through when they were uprooted from their home country. He held nothing back when it came to sharing the struggles his family went through, how much they had to sacrifice, and how much they had to fight to be able to survive in a foreign land. Gusztav and Julianna’s story was very moving. Gusztav’s heart was in the right place, but fate did not allow him to seek what he wanted. The mentions of the American Dream are aptly placed in the story to leave a lasting effect on the reader. What I enjoyed about The Biggest Hole in the Iron Curtain is how the author didn’t sugar coat anything. If his siblings and parents had flaws, he showed them and laid everything bare. I am amazed at how the author was able to tell his complete story in such limited pages, giving ample information to the reader to make a connection and have them hooked to the book until the end. This is an inspirational story that many will love.
