The Beginning of the End by Emily S. Hurricane is the first installment in the Bloodlines book series. Daphne Rhodes is the lone survivor of a deadly pandemic that has killed everyone on earth. She does not understand why she is still alive and wishes for death, but something in her will not let her die. Ever since she was young, Daphne has always known she was different because she feels an unusual strength and rage. Daphne has done her best to hide this from everyone, but now there is no one to hide from. What Daphne needs now are the answers and the only clue she has is her mother's deathbed confession.
The Beginning of the End is an intriguing page-turner. The story has an interesting premise that grips you right from the start. I was completely invested in trying to figure out what would happen next. Emily S. Hurricane did a fantastic job creating and writing this book. From the beautiful book cover to the unique plot, everything is brilliant. The story is fast-paced and easy to read and understand. What makes the story captivating is the mystery of why Daphne is still alive and what makes her different from everyone else. The author gradually builds on this mystery and makes the reader and Daphne find the answers together. I loved Daphne's character because she is determined and self-reliant. Most of the book is about her thoughts and interactions with a persistent bird, which I found to be hysterical. The Beginning of the End is the genesis of Daphne's journey and I cannot wait to read more.
