The Adventures of Zeke: Slumber Party by Kelly Robertson, illustrated by John Konecny, is part of a collection of children’s books about a dog. These stories are all educational and allow adults to discuss childhood issues or events, which could be traumatic for very young children, through the adventures of pets. In this case, Zeke is having a slumber party and is sleeping over at Libby’s family. Libby is another lovely dog. First and foremost, this book shows a child that sleeping over at a friend’s house when his/her parents are away is fun and, most importantly, is not something to be afraid of.
The Adventures of Zeke: Slumber Party by Kelly Robertson is a very colorful story including lively characters who are all extremely pleasant, energetic and enthusiastic. Libby’s family is a very united family, who share evenings together and know how to welcome Zeke, who otherwise could have felt lonely. The text is appropriately simple and will be easy to understand by toddlers. This is, to my mind, a book to read to young children in order to reassure them while entertaining them. It reminds me of firemen in France who sometimes give teddy bears to very young children and ask them to point to where they are hurting. Pets have a way of comforting children. To conclude, this book is comforting, colorful and, last but not least, reassuring and entertaining. I highly recommend it! Indeed this is a must-read for younger children!
