The State of Emergency is the second installment of The Adventures of Rug Bug series by Kay M. Bates. After defeating the Ratty Army and freeing Mousetopia from the clutches of Rat City, Rug Bug, a beetle, enjoys his days as the newly promoted assistant multi-manager of The Cheesy Wheel restaurant. However, when a devastating housequake collapses the entrance tunnel to Mousetopia, it falls upon Rug Bug to seek help from their former enemies from Rat City. Meanwhile, Rat City Head-Honcho, Fat Rat Bart, is facing open mutiny instigated by Geometric City's Queen Dottie. While the Ratty Army volunteers and Mousetopia's inhabitants work together in rebuilding the tunnel, Dottie's army moves toward conquering the Upstairs Kingdom. Will Mousetopia's newfound allies be enough to stop Queen Dottie and her ruthless army?
The State of Emergency is yet another action-packed tale from The Adventures of Rug Bug series you don't want to miss out on. Moving at a blistering pace, author Kay M. Bates's intricate plot navigates through multiple twists and turns, keeping your eyes glued to the pages from start to finish. The multiple POV narrative is particularly useful in showcasing the various factions involved within the story, adding layers to the worldbuilding in general. I found myself compelled by the unique battle strategies and the reluctant alliances between the rats, mice, and the upstairs royalty. The characters are colorful and full of life, and they make every scene a joy to read. Recommend to preteens who love adventure stories.
