Cleo’s entire life could be summed up in a single word—blissful! From delicious food and cozy beds to toy baskets and board games, she possessed everything she ever wanted. Her cat tree is one of a kind. However, her picture-perfect days turned sour with the arrival of Leo, a kitten. Cleo had to share her treasures with him, although she was unhappy about the intrusion. One day, when playing with a ball of yarn, Cleo and Leo are suddenly transported to Egypt. What adventures await them? Will the duo ever become friends? Find out in The Adventures of Cleo & Leo, written and illustrated by Terry Roberts.
Geared toward a young audience, the book features two adorable cats who charmed me with their antics. The outstanding illustrations completely hooked me as Terry Roberts created beautiful collages from separate images. I loved the little details she sprinkled on the pages, for example, the various cat-themed images and prints in Cleo’s room. I loved how she played with colors, showing Cleo’s world turn to monochrome as Leo stole all the attention. Roberts’ clever play with certain words added to the book’s charm. With a hefty dose of magic, the storyline takes readers on an unforgettable adventure. I loved how the book was steeped in Egyptian mythology. The snippets of historical facts sprinkled throughout The Adventures of Cleo & Leo will educate young readers about the rich cultural heritage of Egypt. The questionnaire and glossary at the end will encourage them to learn further.
