Tex, The Witch Boy by Stuart R. West is the story of a teenage boy and his journey through one year in his life. His father suffers from MS and his mother, who once fought and beat cancer, was taken from them in a freak car accident. Some time after her death, Tex’s father lets a secret out of the bag – Tex is a witch, following in his mother’s footsteps. This piece of news coincides with the murder of a boy at Tex’s school – a boy who used to bully Tex and his friends, Olivia, Ian, and Josh. Bob Bellman, another bully, picks up where the murdered boy left off and things turn nasty, resulting in one of the kids ending up in hospital. Two more murders follow the first and Tex finds himself drawn into the mystery, becoming a target for the killer and honing his witch skills in a bid to protect his loved ones. Using those skills, he finds himself face to face with the murderer, a person he least expected it to be.
To be honest, I found this book a little slow to start off with, but I must say I’m glad I persevered with it. Once it got going, the pace flew in a series of twists and turns that left me in awe of the skill of the author, Stuart West. With Tex, The Witch Boy, he has managed to weave a tale, based on true events, of how a group of children fight, against all the odds, to win against school bullies. It is a tale of courage, betrayal and survival, one that everybody, young or old, should take the time to read.
