Teddie Goes Airborne is a children’s animal picture book written by Eve Swanson and illustrated by Stephanie Fliss Dumas. Teddie loved getting up just a bit early and being the first turtle to arrive at the pond. He’d survey his domain: the pond fringed with cattails and dotted with iridescent dragonflies and the broad blue sky arching overhead. Teddie stood at the top of the cliff that was perfect for sliding, tucked in his legs, and threw himself over the edge. He loved feeling the rush of air as he flew for those few moments before entering the water. It was so much like flying and Teddie wished above all else that he could really fly. But turtles couldn’t fly like the birds and butterflies -- or could they? What Teddie saw that early morning flying overhead filled him with awe.
Eve Swanson’s Teddie Goes Airborne illustrates the power of dreams and imagination. One can’t help but feel for the young red-eared slider as friends and family alike are skeptical of his story about the giant flying turtle. Stephanie Fliss Dumas’s illustrations are masterful. Each watercolor panel is a visual feast filled with details, colors and images that delight and surprise the careful viewer. I especially loved the panel that shows Teddie and his friends frolicking at the pond. The sight of turtles doing acrobatics is as marvelous as it is unexpected and fun. Teddie teaches kids to hold fast to those dreams; it’s the best way to make them come true. Teddie Goes Airborne is most highly recommended.
