Tall-Ah Earth by Victoria Lehrer, the fourth book of the New Earth Chronicles, is a visionary epic of action, powerful spiritual awakening, and life in space. Tall-Ah Earth, a terraformed planet similar to Earth, houses many oids, humanoid beings with animal traits like apisoids, reptiloids, leonoids, and avesoids, led by their leader, Onashi, a pantheroid. Trouble ensues, however, when syphoners, metallic flea-like war machines of the Dracolians, begin to escape from their electromagnetic enclosure, massacring Tall-Ah Earth inhabitants. Meanwhile, Jack Merrick, captain of the Stella Lumina, an advanced intergalactic starship, is tasked with freeing prisoners taken by the Lucien, a hive-mind dedicated to expanding itself by removing their prisoners' individuality and adding them to the Lucien. Jack frees Renae, Nurse, and a host of apisoid children slated to start a new life on Tall-Ah Earth.
Victoria Lehrer’s Tall-Ah Earth mesmerized me throughout with intricate and interconnected storylines between all characters. The characters themselves are fleshed out extremely well and undergo extensive development with the experiences they endure. The themes of technological advancement versus spiritual awakening are explored perfectly and form a stark contrast between Jack, his crew, and the inhabitants of Tall-ah Earth. Similarly, the dichotomy displayed between the Lucien, a free will-stealing hive-mind, and the creativeness of individuals like Renae form a strong narrative not too dissimilar from issues of our own society. Victoria Lehrer captured my imagination with vivid details and descriptions of the scenery of Tall-Ah Earth and space. Tall-Ah Earth is an incredible epic that lives up to the visionary genre and fans of Star Wars and Star Trek will thoroughly enjoy what’s on offer.
