Axel likes to visit his grandmother. She often gives him treats, and when he visited today, she served him a bowl of blueberries. However, just before Axel could start eating, Grandmother had to answer the door. She was taking a little longer at the door, but Axel could not wait anymore to taste the blueberries. Axel accidentally drops the bowl on the floor as he tries to pick it up from the table. Axel realizes he has made Grandmother’s light-colored rug dirty and hides it from her. He plans to wash the rug while Grandmother is sleeping. Lucky for Axel, it is not long before Grandmother starts snoring on the couch. Axel quickly tries to clean the rug, but something happens to it. What will happen to Axel? Find out in Tuula Pere’s Axel Washes the Rug (Axel and Ava).
If you are looking for a children's action book, then Tuula Pere’s Axel Washes the Rug is the right pick. Weaving an intriguing plot, the author takes young readers into a magnificent world of imagination. The colorful images by Nyamdorj Lkhaasuren beautifully complemented the text and made the story engaging. The author’s choice of words will enrich young readers' vocabularies. Through Axel’s story, the author teaches kids the importance of honesty, owning up to mistakes, and apologizing, among many other lessons. If Axel had told his grandmother immediately about the rug, things would have been different. The author also demonstrates that there is no greater love than that of family, and no mistake is unforgivable. Grandmother forgives Axel when he admits his mistake and asks for help. This book is a good bedtime story.
