Taíno Tales: The Legend of Coquí is the retelling of how a species of small frogs native to Puerto Rico received their name. Vicky Weber introduces us to the historic Taíno people and one of their legends. The fable is a simple story of love and the forces that conspire against it. As any good myth goes, it has elements of truth and some fantasy thrown in. Vicky tells us the age-old tale of star-crossed lovers Coquí and Caguana, the spirit of love. As they plan to meet each other one day, the evil spirit Juracán steals Coquí away. Caguana created the little frog that would call out “Co-kee” every night, hoping the lovers would reunite once more.
Taíno Tales is a wonderfully engaging and informative picture book about the Taíno people and one of their myths. As I was not familiar with the Taíno people, I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful tale skillfully written by Vicky Weber. She provides a useful pronunciation guide and additional facts about the Taíno people and some words we use today, thanks to their language. Olha Melnyk provided the illustrations for this children’s book. I love her artistic ability and the romantic style of the pictures she produced for this lovely myth. Olha and Vicky succeed in bringing to life a historic and indigenous tribe of the Caribbean. The book is not only extremely interesting but also educational as children should be exposed to and encouraged to explore history.
