Survival Can Be Deadly by Charlotte Stuart is a Discount Detective Mystery. Cameron is in desperate need of a job and she may have found the perfect one. It’s a little unconventional but Penny-wise Investigations may be just what she needs to start something new in her life, though her mother suggests she just needs to get back into dating. She meets her coworkers and learns that her predecessor has gone missing, so she picks up where he left off with a case that takes her to the San Juan Islands and straight into a survivalist camp in search of a missing girl. Cameron doesn’t expect to be in over her head and having to fight for her life when the case takes a dangerous turn.
Charlotte Stuart delivers a fun and lighthearted mystery with a spunky sleuth that’s getting her life back on track by joining a detective agency. She must learn how to balance her crazy new job with her quirky home life which is a struggle that plays an intricate part in her journey. She’s a recent widow so this new job is her officially getting back out there. It’s a crazy move but it’s a decision that helps her find her way back to herself. Scenes with her family are charming and heartwarming as Stuart explores the relationship Cameron has with her two kids and with her mother. Her two kids are supportive of her new path in life and these moments show how genuine and loving she is. It’s entertaining to see her as a mom that corrects her kids' grammar and then sees her going undercover as part of the survivalist camp.
Stuart has an honest voice and weaves a realistic journey for Cameron. Stuart provides plenty of humor stemming from the charming cast of characters. Each one adds a fun lightness to the mystery and provides different aspects to Cameron’s life. Survival Can Be Deadly is a delightful mystery with charming characters, lighthearted humor, heartwarming family moments, a spunky sleuth, an intriguing look at survivalists, and the stunning location of the San Juan Islands.
