Flowers, sun, and bright blue skies can all be found in Elissa Kerr's beautiful new children's book Sunkissed. Kerr has written a charming story about gardening and a little girl following in her mother's footsteps. As the weather warms up, the girl and her dog head outside to find signs of spring and new growth. Her mother is busily planting her garden, and the girl now feels confident enough to plant sunflower seeds on her own. Each step is detailed as the sunflowers grow and the seasons pass. Kerr has included more information at the end of the story about sunflowers and collecting their seeds for roasting.
Elissa Kerr has written another charming story full of the wonder of the outdoors. As in her other books, Sunkissed celebrates the growing independence of kids after they have been mentored by caring adults. Challenges occur along the way, but the girl's mother is always there to lend support. Kerr has mastered the essence of the perfect picture book. She incorporates factual information about gardening with a sweet, simple story that will keep kids engaged throughout. Zoe Saunders' illustrations are a perfect match for the rhyming text. Her pictures are filled with flowers, bees, and butterflies in beautiful soft colors. She depicts the little girl and her faithful canine companion with humor and warmth. Kerr's rhymes flow effortlessly, making this a perfect choice for reading aloud. The tale is another great collaboration between Kerr and Saunders. I'm looking forward to many more outstanding picture books from this duo.
