In Summerhaven by Tiffany Odekirk, Hannah Kent returns to the country estate that held her most precious memories as a child. She was pledged to marry young Oliver Jennings and, to her, nothing has changed. Years later, she wishes to pick up where they left off, but Oliver no longer expresses the same interest. Her memories of his older brother, Damon, aren't pleasant. His endless teasing as a child still upsets her whenever he is around. When Oliver publicly snubs Hannah, Damon steps in to help her retain her dignity. Devising a plan to help Hannah win Oliver back, Damon suggests they pretend to court. Their courting grabs Oliver's attention, but spending time with Damon has caused Hannah to have doubts about her childhood memories of him. Will this deception backfire on the careful plans laid to get Oliver and Hannah back together?
I found Summerhaven to be a lovely novel that emphasizes the crucial aspects of marriage: love, trust, and loyalty. Tiffany Odekirk weaves her story with priceless lessons about distorted childhood memories. Even the best-laid plans get turned upside down when the heart is involved. The interaction between the characters had the right amount of drama, with emotional issues that will keep the reader enchanted. My favorite part would be each horrible memory Hannah recalls; Damon remembered how he was the one looking out for her well-being, not Oliver. Damon just had a unique way of displaying his care for her. The author writes a story that will grab your heart as you follow love down an unusual path.
