In Sullivan's Secret (Marie Bartek & The SIPS Team, Book 1) by Robin Murphy, veterinarian Marie Bartek is able to see the dead, an ability that comes back in full force after almost 18 years since her last encounter with a spirit. Now it seems the spirits of the boy and the woman are trying to warn her about impending danger. Together with her close friend, she co-founds the Sullivan's Island Paranormal Society, embracing her gift and helping others even if they no longer walk among the living.
Sullivan’s Island is a perfect background for this paranormal mystery story; its historical facts are fascinating, prompting me to do a little reading about them myself. The plot has a moderate pace and following Marie Bartek’s personal journey in embracing her ability is intriguing, particularly when a serial killer is on the loose on the island. Her friend, Gale Winters, is the perfect confidante and SIPS is another proof of their strong friendship in searching for the truth. Along with Marie's work as a vet and her romance with Sheriff Cory Miller, her idyllic life is in stark contrast to the killings. Disruptive episodes for the local residents with clues and red herrings gradually fill the narrative until the truth is revealed. Overall, Sullivan's Secret: Book 1 of Robin Murphy's Marie Bartek & The SIPS Team series is an interesting read.
