Stop Breathe and Think: Temper Tantrum and Feeling Book for Kids is a children’s self-help picture book written by Nesrine Sleiman and illustrated by Aytan Khalafova. Lemar is a little girl who is sure she will someday become a famous artist. Drawing and painting are activities that make her smile and keep her occupied. Even in school, her first inclination is to do more artwork. One day, while she was busily drawing, her classmates and friends invited her to help with the tower they were building. She left her picture on the table and went to help them. When she came back, the picture was gone. Where did it go? What happened to it? It was a good picture, and she wanted to color it in. Lemar’s anger, frustration, and other strong emotions quickly built up to tantrum proportions, then her teacher came to help her calm down. It seemed an impossible feat, but it wasn’t really.
In Stop Breathe and Think: Temper Tantrum and Feeling Book for Kids, Nesrine Sleiman shares techniques kids and caregivers can rely on to help kids learn to cope with strong emotions and regain control even after a tantrum has begun. Her three-step solution is something that’s easy for kids to remember and fall back on when things go badly. I especially enjoyed seeing the author as a character in the story. This added a personal, extra-special touch to the book and its usefulness. Aytan Khalafova’s colorful illustrations bring Lemar, her teacher, and her friends to life brilliantly. This is a grand selection for storytime, which can naturally lead to a discussion about and practice of relaxation techniques for young readers. It’s also written at an acceptable level for young readers to try on their own. Stop Breathe and Think: Temper Tantrum and Feeling Book for Kids is highly recommended.
