In 2014, a boating accident resulted in the disappearance of Stacy Underwood, a journalist and wife of real estate bigwig, Charles Underwood. Detective Henry is assigned the case but dies before solving it. Ten years later, Henry’s wife, Iris, goes on a cruise. She discovers Charles Underwood’s dead body in the ship’s pool. Though she feels she should leave the case to the detectives to solve, she is compelled to honor her late husband’s memory by solving Charles' and Stacy’s mysterious cases. As she proceeds with the investigation, she forges friendships and makes new enemies on the ship.
Wright deftly navigates the characters’ lives and their connection to Charles Underwood. He skillfully blends the past and present, creating a spine-tingling mystery with unexpected twists. Iris is a likable, compelling main character determined to unravel the details of the case her husband left unsolved. Her trip begins with a deep foreboding of impending danger which adds to the suspense in the novel. Other characters are mysterious with intriguing backstories. The pace picks up as details emerge about Stacy’s disappearance and Charles’s suspicious death, creating a thrilling storyline and an enthralling, unpredictable ending. Perish in Paradise (An Iris May Mystery) by Christian Wright is a riveting read with fascinating characters and exciting cases that fans of mystery novels will love.
