Soulspark by Eliza Tilton is an innocent young adult romance novel about a seventeen-year-old who finally experiences a bit of happiness in her otherwise troubled life. It's only been six months since her mother died, and Jessica isn't coping very well. She feels like an outcast in her home with her stepfather and stepbrother, and she can't get the anxiety medication she needs until she goes to therapy again, which she has no desire to do. When she meets Caleb, life begins to look a little brighter. Their mutual love of cars and the fun they have together make their relationship seem perfect. However, Caleb is the son of the new pastor at Jessica's mother church, and Jessica sometimes doesn't feel like she measures up to Caleb's Christian expectations. With different lifestyles, secret pasts, and potential betrayal, Jessica begins to question whether this relationship made her life better or worse.
Combining social issues, teen drama, romance, and a touch of spirituality, Soulspark is a quick, easy-to-read tale about a girl who is easy to relate to. Jessica is living with a lot of trauma and just doing her best to get by while also dealing with all of the problems that every other teenager has to deal with. Although it seemed minor in the story, I liked Eliza's portrayal of the relationship between Jessica and her stepfather, and I can imagine how awkward such a relationship and living situation may be after Jessica lost both of her parents. Her relationship with Caleb is cute but also comes with its problems and leaves her facing decisions that readers have probably also had to experience. Deciding between the heart and the head is often a difficult choice to make.
