When Jack Carter finally opened his eyes and found himself in the ER, looking at a beautiful nurse, he was grateful to her for saving him from the excruciating pain that just moments before was wracking his entire body. However, all that changed when his assistant Aleah died while in Sophie's care, under circumstances that he deemed negligent. Aleah's death had affected Sophie like no other. As a surgical nurse, she had lost patients before, but this time it was different. This one haunted her. Maybe she had not done everything to save Aleah, or maybe it was because Jack had openly blamed her of being negligent. Either way, she was filled with unrelenting guilt. Jack could not stop blaming himself for the life lost so soon, but even more so, he could not stop blaming Sophie for what he considered to be her part in it all. However, beyond the blame and the guilt each carried, there was something else between these two and, as their paths started to cross more and more, each felt the undeniable pull towards the other - but how could they move past the thick barrier that Aleah's death had built between them.
Catherine Lanigan welcomes you back to Indian Lake with yet another deserving addition to the Shores of Indian Lake series in Sophie's Path. The book takes you back to the familiar cosy town with an all access pass into the intricate lives of its close knit community. Once again, she delivers a worthy read with a vivid setting, a captivating plot, and engaging pivotal characters. The story also brings back some of the series' favorites and I especially liked how Catherine Lanigan gives the reader a chance to see how their lives have progressed since the last story, and how she manages to do this without taking anything away from the current main story. Also embedded in this story of loss, guilt, blame and love is an important message on drug addiction.
