"The only selfish life is a timid one. To hold back, to withdraw, to keep the best in reserve, both overvalues the self, and undervalues what the self is.”

In Somewhere In Between, author Aaron Kappel has penned a thought-provoking novel through the eyes of Jude, a character that comes to accept his true self that does not fit in with his evangelical roots nor his family and wife. Jude examines the questions that once caused immense fear and uncertainty. He evaluates the past and its glaring fissure to find the elusive meaning of life. Has the past successfully provided a better world? “...we’ll repeat the same mistakes because we, as a unit, as a family, as a nation even, will never learn.” In his solace, Jude struggles to comprehend as his own inner voice turns against him.

Somewhere In Between is a broad canvas filled with incisive portraits of the complexity of life and one man’s endeavor to find answers; some are fully explored while others are, in my opinion, abruptly cut short. On the other hand, Aaron Kappel deftly scrutinizes – albeit not fully deciphers – these difficult subjects through the protagonist Jude. Highly inquisitive, Jude is a fascinating central character and one of the best that I have read so far. However, there are times when I feel Jude tries so hard to see the past, his own or otherwise, as purely misinterpreted. Also, as impressive as Kappel is in engaging readers with his deep conversational style of writing, I cannot say the same for the non-sequential scenes. At times, it can be difficult to pinpoint where the protagonist is in his personal quest for truths. Yet, overall, this is undeniably a compelling read.

A spectacular debut.
A portrayal that is at times deeply moving, brutally honest and bitingly funny- Kappel creates a character whose journey results in a story that is affecting, spooky, insightful and tender.
Excited to see what is to come from this very talented writer.

This book raises a lot of questions that are not asked often enough in complacency of daily life. I found the childhood memories to be especially powerful and the depictions of love’s limitations to be heartbreaking. The strengths and shortcomings of this novel both stem from the author’s desire to reach out to the reader and engage them in conversation; at its best, this want is achieved extremely effectively, while at other times, important questions are asked with not enough time to properly explore them. Because the scenes are not in chronological order, it can be hard to follow where the protagonist is in his life and where certain realizations are taking place in his personal journey. Still it is a great testament to the complexity of life.
