So Big the Land by Sue Grocke is a beautiful, inspiring memoir, filled with grit and adventure. We are used to reading stories of people leaving rural areas to build their lives in bigger cities. But Sue Grocke's story is different. It starts with a powerful premise: a city girl leaves everything she knows, her entire world and familiar landscapes to spend her life with a man she barely knows. But is she cut out for the kind of laborious life of this man's world?
So Big the Land by Sue Grocke is a tale of love, of hope, of grit, and adventure. We follow Sue as she transforms herself from a city girl into someone who faces hardship and hard work head-on. It is a tale of resilience and self-discovery as one woman explores the untamed landscapes of Australia and its Aboriginal community. The setting, both physical and cultural, is captured in great detail and readers can actually get clear images of the locales and landscapes against whose backdrop the narrative takes place. Sue Grocke has the gift of storytelling in her and she infuses her writing with insightful passages. She captures the gamut of human emotions with finesse and shows readers what the human spirit can do when inspired by love.
So Big the Land is a tale of love that is multifaceted, one for a human being and one for the unconquered earth. The prose is beautiful and there is something very compelling about the narrative voice. It pulls readers into the worldview of the author and keeps them engaged until the very last page. A great read indeed.
