Snowball: Chronicles of a Wererabbit by M.Y. Zeman is a fantasy book with cute characters and a deeper, powerful message. The story begins with Snow, a baby “wererabbit” who lives in a research laboratory and believes that is all she is destined for. Her dream however, is to one day become a hero. Her life changes when John, a vampire breaks into the laboratory in search of his missing research and rescues her in the midst of a fire. John brings her home and finds himself in the position of a caregiver and a parent. With encouragement and support from his closest friend, Edgar, he sets out to raise the rabbit who as she grows up, is able to shift her form and become a girl or rabbit at will. However, humans are on the hunt for vampires and John and Edgar have to flee. As Snow grows up, she makes friends with creatures including werewolves, Charlene, the telepathic mouse, searches for werewolf serum, and finally comes into her own to fulfil her destiny. This coming of age story with its twists and turns as the trio run into dangers from all directions forms the plot of the novel.

Snowball: Chronicles of a Wererabbit by M.Y. Zeman is a surprisingly endearing story about Snow. All of the characters in the book, including Snow herself are well drawn and I found myself rooting for Snow, John, and Edgar. The bond between these three and especially Snow and her “dad”, John is heartwarming. Along with the action and mysterious happenings, there is also a good dose of humor and warmth that make this a thoroughly enjoyable read. The artwork interspersed throughout the book adds extra charm to the story. This is a book that anyone, adults and youngsters alike, would enjoy.

At the age of three, Snow gains a new ability – she can turn into a girl. Now it’s time to start discovering who she really is, why she has the ability to shift between human and rabbit form. Join hands with Snow and tag along on her journey; meet vampires and werewolves, things you thought were the creation of an imaginative mind. Watch her as she struggles to learn how to control her ability to shift between rabbit and human; the trials of school and the tribulations of growing up. Join her in a battle to save lives and join her in her dream to become a hero and, most of all, to be accepted.

Snowball: Chronicles of a Wererabbit by M.Y. Zeman was a great book. It was a unique story that made a real refreshing change to read and I thoroughly enjoyed every page. It has everything – a great storyline, fantastic characters, humor, and emotion. There were a few little surprises along the way and the story rolled on, building tension as it went, until the climactic finale. It felt like a fairy tale and was written from two points of view – that of Snowball, telling her own story of growing up, battling through school and making friends with Charlene, David and Josh; the second story is John’s, the story of how he and Edgar met and how their friendship has endured the years. There is also a nice twist to the epilogue, which leads me to believe that there may be another story in the making. I seriously believe that, no matter what age you are, you will enjoy this book. There is nothing about this story that isn’t to like and it made a really nice change to sink into something of this caliber and be swept along by the story. Loved it and I hope there is more.
