Snow Bunny: Chronicles of a Wererabbit, Book Two is a fantasy for young adults and preteens written by M.Y. Zeman and illustrated by Jason Moser. Snow still remembers when her dad rescued her from a lab when she was a very small and frightened baby bunny, and she could feel Josh's fear as she helped him make his escape from the lab where he was being held. Josh is a werewolf, and he was trapped and injected with a painful substance that's made it impossible for him to change back into his wolf form. While Snow's dad is a bit uneasy about the sixteen-year-old staying in their home now that Snow is fourteen, he's been busy trying to help Josh recover from the experimentation that he had been subjected to. After an attack on Snow by a strange reptilian half-man, which had occurred in the first book, her dad and his long-term partner, Edgar, have been looking for a safer place for the family to stay. When they finally bring Snow and Josh to see their new home, they're astonished when they realize that their destination is actually a deserted correctional facility. Dad and Edgar say that they've got great plans for the old buildings, but Snow's not all that sure.
M.Y. Zeman's young adult and preteen fantasy/coming of age novel, Snow Bunny, is action-packed and exciting. While this is the second book in Zeman's Wererabbit series, Snow Bunny has enough background information within the story itself to allow it to be read on its own. That being said, I loved the first book, Snowball, which relates Snow's early years with her dad, and would highly recommend that work to readers either before this one, or after, if they've decided they just can't wait to start reading Snow Bunny. Zeman sets this tale in several different locations. There's the correctional facility which actually becomes a lot more fun than one might think, and then the ranch where the family goes for a vacation.
Snow's dad and his partner, Edgar, are unforgettable characters and hearing their tales from their first years together gave the book a marvelous historical feel. And, yes, I forgot to mention, marvels await the reader who ventures within these pages: shrieking spiders, sand cats who burrow beneath the sand, and a host of other interesting beings are just waiting for you to open up this book. And Jason Moser's masterful illustrations may make you lose all perspective and think for a moment that you are in there as well. Snow Bunny: Chronicles of a Wererabbit, Book Two is a grand adventure tale that entertains on a number of levels, and it is most highly recommended.
