In "Skating on the Edge", author Joelle Charbonneau has her main character of Rebecca Robbins about to hop into the dunk tank at the Senior Center carnival. At the last minute, Rebecca has to attend to the skating rink she inherited following the death of her mother. Her last minute replacement is a member of the roller derby team and she has a reputation for being a rough and rugid player. When the replacement Sherlene-n-Mean is electrocuted in the tank, a series of misfortunes befall Rebecca and she must use her well-developed detective skills to attempt to ascertain just who the target of the misfortunes really is. She has help from her eccentric grandfather who is a would-be Elvis impersonator and she meets resistance from her mildly sociopathic father.
This is a fun read and teens in particular will probably relate to the zany characters and the offbeat manner in which detective Rebecca goes about solving the crime. Rebecca's three bodyguards are roller derby members who attempt to keep her safe by thwarting her ability to explore. All the characters are endearing and will remain true to their personality to the end. It is a truly lighthearted cast that will keep the reader wanting more. And then, you add in a potential love triangle and the book has something for nearly every reader. I thoroughly enjoyed the spunky characters and the cohesive nature of the small town folks.
