Sins of the Fathers: A true story of rape and deception in the Catholic Church...and spiritual renewal, written by Denise L Buchanan, is a book that documents the author's ghastly experiences with the Catholic church and a priest, and how she courageously battled her own demons to enter into a life of hope, healing, and spiritual awakening.
Denise L. Buchanan grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, in the Christian faith with deep connections to the Catholic Church. Upon turning 17, Denise's trust and faith in the church and its people vanished when she encountered the unthinkable: being molested and impregnated by one of the church priests. After being forced to abort the baby and sworn to silence about the whole incident, she carried this terrible secret within herself for decades. Denise shares her experiences as she recounts her journey through pain, guilt, shame, and betrayal as she went through life seeking answers, healing, and a new spiritual guidance.
The saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" applies to Denise Buchanan's Sins of the Fathers. At first glance, a reader reading the title and viewing the illustrations on the cover might assume this book would be a tirade about the Catholic Church and the author's now negative outlook towards religion. It is, in fact, just the opposite. The author writes in a pleasant, positive tone. Although she encountered hardship throughout her life, she has learned not to let the negativity of the past weigh down upon her future.
Readers will find many lyrics to songs, quotes, and poetry throughout the book, but this book is not for everyone, and is more suited for mature readers due to the subject matter within.
