Simon and the Solar System by Derek T. Kent is a children's educational book about the solar system. It is a delightfully illustrated book for children who want to learn about the solar system, but who also want to embark on an adventure, who have tests to get ready for and worry about them! It is beautifully hand-painted in magnificent watercolors by artist Mary Gutfleisch. Young Simon Beck can’t fall asleep because he is worried about not remembering his lesson about the solar system when he has a test the following day. However he is saved when a lovely tiny alien named Neil Newton lands in his room and takes him on a wonderful tour of the solar system.
Simon and the Solar System by Derek T. Kent is a lovely volume which allows parents and grandparents as well as teachers to teach in a fun way everything any child could dream of about the solar system, while entertaining them with a fun, adventurous story. Indeed Neil Newton takes Simon to Saturn and its deadly ice rings (where they fly dangerously), and the gaseous planets such as Jupiter. They even use teleportation too and there seems to be no end to their adventures! Well, until the last clever twist in the tale which is completely unexpected and really made me laugh (especially as I am a teacher!). To top it all, the text rhymes and makes it a delight to be read to children. It is well-written, fun and educational. That is why I wholeheartedly recommend it!
