Silver Bells by Liesel Kippen is a compilation of the author's original themed poetry that revolves around the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and spirit of the holiday season, and a few other non-seasonal pieces sprinkled in for good measure. Kippen gives readers seventeen poems in all and each draws on the emotional elements of what we feel as we either embrace or are embraced by different experiences. These range from the feelings that Christmas nights evoke in all their splendor with frothy drinks, sweet treats, and the gorgeous twinkling of lights in Snug as a Bug, to the less visible but ever empowering faith one puts in God in the poem God is in Control. Each poem is entered into via a crisp, full color photograph or design to set the mood for what is to come.
I have to admit that I got a little bit misty-eyed as I read Silver Bells by Liesel Kippen. The descriptions are incredibly simple but are capable of really tugging at the heartstrings. I did not grow up in a country where rain was a normal occurrence and did not see my first fleck of real snow until I was in my early thirties, so the standout to me is Wintry Winter Wonderland and its singsong ode to a season I so dearly love now. Because of this and the newness of the season to me that is akin to that a child, I am likely to be more perceptive to the magic Kippen describes as she writes, “As winter’s dust magically falls, On icicles and surfaces, That aren’t snugly layered in shawls...” This is a fantastic compilation that is perfect for cozy winter reading. Very highly recommended.
