Silly Nana Sings a Song is a rollicking, fun picture book about, well, about silly Nana who just loves to sing! Nana arrives unexpectedly at her granddaughter’s home one morning, cooks up a pudding for breakfast, and then takes the girls out on an adventure. They leave with great excitement in Nana’s old Volkswagen Combi (driving over Mom’s begonias in the process - several times). Wherever they go on their day out – in the car, to the mall, at a rented cabana, with friends, or a stop at a park to listen to a jazz band – Nana sings. She sings all day long from start to finish. All the characters created by author Stacey Roberts are animals, with Nana being a moose.
The illustrations done by Stacey Roberts to accompany the story are simple yet so appropriate. The anthropomorphized characters are delightfully apt, bright, and cheerful. The text is in rhyme, which adds to the read-aloudability of this happy picture book. It also makes for good pacing, as well as surprise elements just around the corner. Adults reading the book to young listeners will recognize some of the original songs that Nana sings. And for the little ones, there is a ‘search for the bee’ instruction right at the beginning. This will keep them looking while they are being read to. I would love a Nana (or I’d love to be a Nana) like this! Silly Nana Sings a Song is one of four books in the Silly Nana series.
