"Silent Fortune" by Janet Carafa captures your attention from the very first illustration and the introduction to the silent land in the sky. In nonsense rhyme and colorful prosaic imagery we meet Fortune, the mime who secretly wants more than this magical rainbow cloud life, but will she be able to give up her home for the loud, confusing world below? Who would want to leave this place where nobody ever is warned to be quiet? Where play, dance and coloring with thoughts and emotions fill the day. Yet Fortune longs for more, travels to the earth and begins new adventures with a lion named Phil who longs to become a famous dancer. Follow the growing friendship between Fortune and the lion as they learn how to understand one another. Children will laugh out loud at the mishaps along Fortune and Phil's journey to fulfill their dreams, from the first tail-waving knockdown to the spinning tornado that threatens to end their fun and dreams.
With its repetitive, sing-song style, I can imagine myself reading "Silent Fortune" to a child in the womb, a pre-schooler, or primary grade child, and most likely an imaginative little girl. It is definitely a read-to book that will inspire giggles and empathy all the way through. At bedtime it will encourage wistful dreams. For an afternoon project, the story lends to creative artwork or dance. Carafa has captured the artistic nature of miming and translated it effectively into an emotional and imaginative story that envelops the reader/listener in the world of silent communication. At the same time, she has created a unique reading experience that will give your little one courage to pursue her dreams.
