Author Biography

Thea Burgess is the author of The Serpents of Caesar historical fantasy series set in an alternate first century Roman Empire – Rome, but not as we know it. Signum, the first book in the series, follows cartographer and spy Verendus as he embarks on a perilous – and unauthorised – mission.
Thea cannot recall when her fascination with Ancient Rome began, but growing up in Aquae Sulis (modern day Bath, England), she was aware of the city’s Roman heritage from a young age and learnt to swim in the warm spa waters so coveted by the Romans.
As well as researching and writing about Ancient Rome, Thea enjoys reading art history books. Unlike her protagonist Verendus, she isn’t very good at drawing.

In Signum: The Serpents of Caesar (Book 1) by T.R. Burgess, upon his return, Ericus Vedius Verendus discovered that The Watch had been in Iolia, threatening the way the people on the island lived. Even with treaties in place, the once peaceful harbors of Lignoran and Iolia were not on the best of terms. Ericus attempted to gather information from an informant but later met his father Marcus Verendus face-to-face. Marcus claimed not to know anything about the symbol of the Signum and had several questions of his own to put to his son. These included how Ericus made it to the Island relatively unharmed and queries about the Emperor’s death. With rumors and fear spreading through the Islands, Marcus and Ericus agreed that it was time to act. Will their actions bring peace, or will the Verendus men wind up either imprisoned or dead? Is their goal brave and noble, or is it a suicide mission?

Signum by T.R. Burgess is a fantastic story of a young man named Ericus who returns home to find that his beloved Island of Iolia has been overrun by those who committed one horrible act after another, including the murder of politicians. The characters are distinct personalities that drive the story and make it relatable to adult readers. I loved the action involved as Ericus and his father butt heads while trying to find out why The Watch is there and their connection to the Signum. I recommend this story to anyone who loves a wild ride of a tale that they won’t want to put down, and I hope that the author has many more like this one in the works. I will be keeping my eyes open for book 2 of the Signum.

I didn’t know what to expect as usually don’t read this type of book but a friend suggested it and I’m so glad as I found it an excellent read.
I’m still not sure what is fact and know very little about the Roman Empire but it has wet my appetite and now am looking up facts about places mentioned.
The characters are interesting and I formed pictures of them especially Verendus, Corinna and Mos. The book in fast paced, vivid and sinister and I found I wanted to see what was happening next. I did reread some because not knowing about that era I didn’t always understand what some things meant, although it does explain well in the glossary.
I will definitely look forward to the next adventure and in the meantime swot up on ancient Rome.
I especially enjoyed the afterword at the end as it helped me find how everything came together.

A thoroughly enjoyable historical fantasy set in an alternate Roman Empire. The author has created a vivid sense of time and place peopled with fantastic characters. The story is fast paced and exciting, a real page-turner – I was hooked from the start.

I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

A very interesting, easy to follow historical fictional novel though on saying that all the terminology, places, situations and items sound so authentic I was transported to a time long ago. I appreciate that this is the author's first novel, but what a starter. I enjoyed it so much that I have bought four copies, one each for my close family for Christmas. As they all like history, I know they will enjoy it as much as I have. I usually pass my books on, but this one is definately a keeper to read again. Thank you

A very enjoyable book, twists and turns, with a history in every corner. And because I enjoyed this book so much, I not only recommended it to the creative writing group I go to, but also purc hased another five copies to give to other friends for Christmas 2023.
