Do you think you know the story of Hansel and Gretel? Well, think again? Sibling Wars is the newest entry in the Fairytale Fraud series by Katie Pye. We meet Hansel and Gretel and the witch, but this version has a little twist. Instead of the siblings being out in the woods because there was a famine, they have been sent outside because of their fighting. They wander in the woods until they come upon a house made of gingerbread. The witch, being a little confused, mistakes Gretel for Rapunzel and traps her in the house while Hansel is left outside. With the help of a friendly goose, Gretel and Hansel work together to escape from the witch, learning an important lesson along the way.
Kate Pye has written a fabulous, fractured fairytale with some helpful lessons about getting along. What a great way to use a familiar fairytale and adapt it in a new and fresh way. I also love the way she has overlapped some other fairytale characters in this story! Anastasia Belik’s illustrations really enhance the story. They have a definite fairytale quality to them. Pye has included some excellent information for all adults who work with children in the back of the book. The Fix-the-Fight thinking and rules are great pointers for children and adults alike! One of the best ways for kids to internalize appropriate behavior is through listening to an engaging story. Sibling Wars is a book that parents and teachers will turn to again and again.
