Shards is a collection of thirty-four poems by James Mirarchi. From the offset, Mirarchi transforms the mundane vision that many people have of their everyday lives, peeling back the layers of what we expect to see and uncovering new truths about what’s really lurking there. The poems in this collection are filled with sharp contrasts, often comparing everyday objects to states of heightened, secret emotions, combined with fascinating wordplay and imagery which leaps into the reader’s mind with colour and life. The progression of poems paints an overall portrait of the human experience as seen through the eyes of its author.
James Mirarchi has done what all poets ought to do, by creating work which evokes vivid images for the reader even from the first few words, but which is also filled with complex messages that you can read and re-read to unpick and enjoy. A personal favourite from this volume was ‘Rebirth,’ which explores the renovation and loss of character in modern architecture. I loved the way the building was personified and given an emotional element by the writer.
The literary art of ‘making strange’ has truly been achieved here, as Mirarchi’s beautiful words and constructions take familiar experiences and give them a whole new appreciation - for example, the dissection of different sensations in the poem ‘Automobile’ is one I know only too well, but have never really thought about before. Overall, Shards is a superb collection of poems and will be appreciated by anyone looking for a highly visual and thought-provoking experience.
