Shadow of the Coalition: The Two Towers Dystopian Science Fiction Romance series by Jamie A. Waters features headstrong Kayla, a ruin rat with ties to the tower and emerging abilities that make her a valuable commodity. As she struggles to manage both her love life and her relationships with conflicting factions, she must also learn to safely control those abilities that threaten her safety and the safety of everyone she knows.
Kayla is the gemstone around which Shadow of the Coalition is built. She is strong, hot-headed, and determined to maintain her own identity in the face of so many people urging her to become someone else. She has a great sense of humor and just enough softness to make her likeable. She is the perfect counterpart to both Carl and Alec, even though the two men are nothing alike; however, I think I enjoyed her interactions with the villains the most. The dystopian world built by Waters is easy to picture and vital to the story, but the world is not the focus of the story — the people are — and the author doesn’t waste excessive detail on epic world building.
Jamie A. Waters does a fabulous job of developing Shadow of the Coalition into an entertaining story with dynamic characters and a suspense-filled plot. While this is the second book of the series, Waters seamlessly drops the reader into the plot without feeling like something is missing, and once immersed in Kayla’s world, watch out. The combination of action, romance, and drama kept me reading from start to finish.
