In Season of the Dead, the post-apocalyptic world is infested by zombies due to the deadly contagion of the Hauksson virus. Anarchy is inevitable, and survivors struggle to remain safe and remain human. Miles apart from each other, separated by states and countries, four individuals who are destined to converge strive for this very crucial goal; Sharon, Gerry, Lucia, and Paul. This thrilling zombie novel is a brilliant collaboration from Lucia Adams, Paul Freeman, Gerald Johnston and Sharon Van Orman.
Intrigued with the number of authors who penned Season of the Dead, it was one of the reasons that I picked it up, other than being a fan of the genre and the Resident Evil films. Sharon in Nebraska starts off the narrative; a zoologist who has the knowledge about the virus, whilst character Gerry in Canada has to face a prison guard turned zombie in jail. In Pennsylvania, Lucia and her squirrel costume instantly lights up this zombie infested story. I chuckled when her costume proved to be anti-zombie, as their claws and bites could not penetrate the material. Lucia is definitely my favorite and I looked forward to her part of the story every time. As for the tough Irishman Paul in Dublin, I’m entertained by his axe-wielding, testosterone fueled rampage against the zombies as well as his attraction towards Sharon.
It was silly of me to only realize the source of inspiration for the characters’ name when I got to chapter five, in which readers will also discover the origin of the Hauksson virus that started it all. Too many cooks usually spoil the broth; obviously this is not the case for Season of the Dead. Lucia Adams, Paul Freeman, Gerald Johnston, and Sharon Van Orman – these four authors made the collaboration work like it was meant to be. Even though each narrative clearly has a different tone, they keep the plot tight until the end, leaving readers with a satisfying resolution, while departing on a note filled with fear but also hope.
