Sara Sarque & the Demon Executioner and Other Stories of Mystery, Terror, Heartbreak, Hope and Humor by D C Mallery is a collection of uncanny and esoteric short stories that include paranormal mystery, mysticism, demons, horror, and even science fiction elements in their most metaphysical form. Any writer can pen a good or great short story, but to write stories like those contained herein takes a special kind of knack that immediately connect to the likes of Dean Koontz and Stephen King, and that’s just the writing style—brief but impactful characterization, scene setting, and dialog. What separates the great from the good is the imagination to set the story’s premise and, in the case of Mr. Mallery, a warped imagination in a very positive way.
When reviewing short story collections, I often highlight the story or a few stories I especially enjoyed. The collection that makes up Sara Sarque & the Demon Executioner and Other Stories of Mystery, Terror, Heartbreak, Hope and Humor is problematic, as I loved (seriously loved) every story. But if pressed, I would call The Society of the Never Coming Back my favorite for pure imaginative excellence and the title story, Sara Sarque and the Demon Executioner, because I love stories of demonic possession, and this tale contains one of the most unique twists about the demonological origin and possession of humans that I’ve ever read. Overall, this truly superb set of stories will put D C Mallery on numerous favorite author lists... he’s certainly on my list.
