The tumultuous 1906 earthquake makes up the backdrop for the historical fiction novel San Francisco by Marian Lindner. Anna O’Malley was born into a life of privilege, her father a renowned jeweller. However, she finds the middle upper class lifestyle stifling, and her mother’s insistence she marry overwhelming. In her own small, rebellious way, Anna sneaks out at night to perform the scandalous can-can with her friend, Eudora. Dr. Peter Sheridan recognized Anna the moment he saw her at the opera as the one he so often watched in the evenings, dancing at The Golden Hyde. They are thrown together by chance again, the evening ending in a disaster of historical proportions. Combined with a vengeful coachman, a city in turmoil, and death on every corner, will Anna and Peter be able to survive long enough to find love?

It has been a while since I read a historical romance about the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, and Ms. Lindner’s novel does not disappoint. I found Anna to be a likeable character, and Lance’s motives absolutely deplorable. I also liked how Lindner incorporated the political climate at the time into her storyline. I did feel the romance between Peter and Anna was rushed, but I can also understand that disasters such as the earthquake can cause people to truly appreciate what they have in life. Very well-written and impeccably edited, San Francisco by Marian Lindner was a joy to read, and I certainly will look for other titles by this author.
