Imagine you're married to the spouse of your dreams and you're raising a couple of wonderful kids together. Your spouse is super awesome because your spouse is super rich and famous, or at least something along those lines. You're, well, with a mental illness to boot, there's nothing really special about you that makes you more than you. The "you" that you are imagining right now is the woman that you will first meet in Running Home by Alisha Perkins, the wife of "three-time MLB all-star" baseball player, Glen Perkins. She writes of finding her voice in running, how baseball has impacted the lives of her family, and how she finally found that, through writing, she could help inspire other people to talk about mental illness.
I'll be frank: I'm not a runner. The first time I tried out for school athletics was at seven years old and the end result was a bit traumatic. I came in last. Did I attempt running after that? Not enough times to bother counting. Alisha Perkins' book makes me want to run again. That's saying a lot, believe me. It's as if her book told me I could fly and I absolutely believed that I can. She sheds some light on topics that most people aren't willing to discuss and I liked that. People who are keeping mum about suffering from a mental illness will relate to everything that Perkins says because her book is real and there's nothing text-bookish about it. It's impactful, to say the least. Writing voice, full marks. "Go ahead, get lost. Lace up your shoes and learn more about yourself."
