Callie Novak, a high school record-breaking track star, is on her way to becoming one of the most celebrated athletes in the state. Her college scholarships are pretty much locked in, and with her current record-breaking time, she could have her choice of schools. She has a wonderfully supportive boyfriend, Keith, who is the greatest guy around. Everyone loves Callie and Keith. Almost as much as Callie loves her twin brother Colton. Life is good. On the night she is hoping to break her own record and set a new one for the headlines, Callie is anxious to find her father and brother in the stands. They are not there yet, her mother reminds her. They never show up. The report sends Callie into a tailspin of rage, regret, and worse.
Ruined Wings by Ashley Fontainne is an unfortunately true reflection of today’s society. Callie’s repeated attempts to combat her own problems represent every parent’s nightmare. Fontainne’s vivid use of in-your-face imagery provides the ease with which today’s youth are lured into the prison of drug addiction. This story is a convincing example of an issue prevalent across the country. Ruined Wings is a must-read for all high school students, counselors, and parents of said students. The author’s message is clearly stated. The reader will fluctuate between feelings of anger, despair, and tentative relief in this powerful story of inspiration.
