Rogue Autonomous (Crimes Of The Future Book 2) by Rahul Bhagat is a science fiction novel set in the golden age of autonomous vehicles. The story centers around a hardworking and tenacious detective called Martin Stump who suffers from the debilitating problem of being technologically challenged. He is assigned the task to investigate a rare road traffic accident. Was it a technical failure or was someone responsible? The Crimes of the Future series of books explores how criminals might exploit technology for their own ends. Crime is nothing new but artificial intelligence is. Detective Stump might struggle with this new technology but he is an old-school investigator and knows how to solve a crime.
Rahul Bhagat writes an insightful story line, combining a solid crime-busting detective with a high tech future. He gave me a flavor of what life might be like living with advanced technology and what crimes we could be up against. This book encourages the reader to think deeply about the future of technology and its role in society. I enjoyed reading about how autonomous vehicles might impact on the daily life of ordinary people. I found some of it, such as the deep learning systems, chilling to think about. Technology aside, I liked the main character immediately and thought he was a fitting character for the book. He was a perfect antidote to the high tech setting. Rogue Autonomous was a great crime thriller. The plot kept me guessing and held my attention throughout. I only wished it was longer!
