Rocky and Roxanne Roadrunner (Nature/Nurture Series) by Pam Robbins gives us a sneak peek into the life of a pair of roadrunners, their family, and their part in keeping the balance of nature. The story follows one of the most amazing birds in the Southwest United States, as they play, explore, and decide where to build a nest to nurture their young and teach them independence. It includes interesting details such as the role of the male in assisting with all aspects of nesting, nighttime egg incubation, and feeding the hatchlings. The illustrations portray the enthusiasm and energy of the growing roadrunner family perfectly as they spend the day in the warmth of the magnificent desert sun and beneath the chilly splendor of the moon at night.
Roadrunners are clever members of the cuckoo family, and this book educates the reader about their lifestyle beyond cartoon stereotypes and folklore beliefs. Rocky and Roxanne Roadrunner is a superb introduction to the habits and family life of two lifelong roadrunner mates. The book is filled with vibrant and lively illustrations by Eduardo Paj that show marvelous details of this fascinating, flightless but fast-running bird and its habitat to keep young readers wide-eyed and amused. Pam Robbins has created a good read-aloud book that uses simple language, short repetitions, and rhythmic words for some phonics and decoding practice that especially targets emergent kindergarten and older readers. As a grandmother and nature lover, the author reveals that caring and parenting skills in family relationships are necessary for the healthy development and independence of the younglings. This picture book can be handy to have around for breaking up boredom on a lazy day and is highly recommended for interactive reading sessions between little curious humans and grown-ups.
