Wondering when and where to propose? Rock Her World by Karl Schwantes gives the prospective groom food for thought. Should you get the bride involved in choosing her own ring, or would she rather be surprised? Can you trust a sister, co-worker, or parent to keep a secret if you involve them in the choices? Choosing the ring involves hand size, skin color, bride’s favorite metal color, and finger size. Should the ring or the diamond be new, or should a family piece be reused, or have that diamond reset in a more modern setting? The author goes into great detail about diamonds, choosing a trusted jeweler, settings, prongs, cleaning, issues of wear, replacement stones, insurance, matching a wedding band, and loads more.
I have to confess that my husband and I never bothered with an engagement ring, preferring instead to put the money toward the house we were buying. That being said, I understand that the issue of an engagement ring is a sensitive and usually necessary part of a courtship. As I read Rock Her World, it was as an outsider looking in. Prospective readers of Karl Schwantes’ book should note that the book was written from an Australian perspective, but almost all of the material contained therein is universal to any man looking to pop the question. This book is a sensible choice for any prospective groom who is feeling lost or befuddled. Prospective brides might want to purchase a copy and leave it prominently on top of his television remote.
