Riven Dawn: A Flagship! Novel (Volume 1) by Mike J. Krentz takes you into the military life of Captain Kate Mahoney, a senior naval aviator who is deployed in a Navy flagship as director of operations for the U.S. 7th Fleet in the Pacific. Amid her official duties, she is also handling her rebellious teenage son, Patrick Winslow, who lives with her divorced sister when she is on assignment. With her history of an abusive childhood, failed marriage, and now a son whom she finds moving away from her, Kate has more dangerous battles to fight than the assignment she is on now.
The book has everything: military action, drama, and romance and the character of Kate is relatable and portrayed very well. She is a strong military heroine who will remain in your mind for a long time, both for her vulnerability as a woman and her strength as a senior naval aviator. All the twists and turns in the plot will take readers on a roller coaster ride. The struggles of alcoholism, abuse, internet stalking, and single parenthood are tangible to readers. This action packed military thriller is a compelling read and all military buffs will enjoy it.
The book is a reflection of the modern life that we see around us: careers, single parenthood, internet predators, and rebellious teenage children. The theme is fast paced and grabs reader attention till the very end. The mysterious internet stalker adds to the intrigue angle of the theme.
