In Resisting the Challenges of the 21st Century by Rembert N Parker, he points out many little quirks about the modern world. In a world of automation, it seems there is little room for maneuvering if things are not programmed into the all-powerful computer. The author owns and runs a gaming and comic store and he is obviously an expert in that field. Towards the end of the book, he comments on the different characters that have appeared in the various comics over the last few decades and how they have been updated, in the author’s view not for the better. In another topic, the author makes a valiant effort to explain the new ways of teaching maths and shows us how complicated the modern teaching system has made what was once simple arithmetic. He picks on a variety of subjects, slow download speed, politics and health care among many others.
This is a book written about the American way of life, although there is spillover into most modern societies, and I think it would be mostly enjoyed by Americans, as reading it in Europe, I lost some of the humour - I am not too familiar with US politics, their Health Care, the ins and outs of the Superbowl and many of the films and TV shows mentioned in the entertainment section. I could relate to the new music versus the old and I’m in total agreement, we should all be able to sing along. I think Resisting the Challenges of the 21st Century by Rembert N Parker is a great book for lovers of computer games and aficionados of comics; he has a sharp eye for detail and puts in print what many of us think. An added bonus is the inclusion at the end of each section of a piece of music relevant to the text, which can be downloaded via the links provided.
