Reading To My Buddy is a heart-warming book concerning a young girl who stutters and a dog named Buddy who loves her regardless. Author Marti Regan takes us into the life of this young girl named Nicki and her frustrations of going to school and being around others. She tells her mother that she isn't going back to school because of her stuttering problem. However, since that wasn't an option she decides that she will never speak again. When Nicki arrives back in the classroom, other kids are trying to talk to her, but she just uses her facial expressions and hand gestures to speak to them. Soon her teacher tells her she has been selected to go to the library and read with Buddy. When she arrives at the library, she sees a dog and finds out that Buddy is a specially trained reading dog. Will Nicki build up her courage as she reads with Buddy? Will her fears begin to subside? Nicki's experience also has an influence on her fellow classmates.
Author Regan shares how a difficulty can be turned into a positive situation when we use resources around us to help build others' confidence and security. This book promotes animals and their ability to help sooth the fears of a child. This is a book that would serve well in schools and libraries, as well as at home for any child to enjoy. I truly enjoyed this excellent book and would welcome the opportunity to read other books by this author.
